‘I know how Ricky’s Girl Felt. It’s Horrific. One Lethal Blow and That Could be it’

The pain and fear of watching a loved one get hurt in the ring was all too clear to see on the face of Jennifer Dooley, the fiancée of Ricky Hatton, when he was knocked out by Manny Pacquiao in Las Vegas the last week. Those feelings are known all too well by Elouise Maccarinelli, the wife of Enzo Maccarinelli, the former WBO cruiserweight champion with whom she has four children.

Sitting ringside supporting a loved one can be a harrowing experience. Last year, Elouise, 33, was feet away when Enzo, 28, was stopped in two rounds by David Haye and, in March, she was there when he was heavily knocked down and stopped against Ola Afolabi. Here she tells …

Gunships kill 30 in attack on Taleban

Pakistan sent helicopter gunships and troops to attack Taleban militants in a district covered by a peace deal after strong United States pressure on the nuclear-armed nation to confront insurgents advancing in its northwest.
At least 31 people were killed yesterday in the operation, which sent some residents of Lower Dir district fleeing carrying small children and few belongings.

The push appeared to endanger a peace pact struck with Taleban militants in neighbouring Swat Valley, although a top official insisted the deal was “intact”. Another official demanded the insurgents disarm, but a Taleban spokesman said the militants would not give up their weapons.

The Lower Dir offensive also came ahead of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari’s scheduled meeting with President …

Australian Soldiers Kill 100 Taliban

AUSTRALIAN soldiers killed more than 100 Taliban fighters in one of the most successful operations of the six-year Afghanistan campaign.

Details of the offensive were revealed during a secret visit to Afghanistan for Anzac Day by Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon who was accompanied by the Sunday Herald Sun.

Operation Aabitoorah or Blue Sword began on March 19 in the northern Helmand province, south of the Australian base in Oruzgan Province and involved Dutch, British, American, Australian and Afghani forces.

The second, called Operation Shak Hawel or Mysterious Area, was fought by troops from the Mentoring and Reconstruction Task Force between April 3 and 15 around Patrol Base Buman in the Chora Valley north of Tarin Kowt.

Afghan Tour Next For SAS

New Zealand’s elite Special Air Force soldiers could be back in Afghanistan within months.

An official request by the United States is understood to have been lodged with New Zealand just hours before a meeting in Washington between Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully and American Secretary of State Hillary Clinton this month.

The request comes as New Zealand reviews its deployment to the long-running war, including the possible early withdrawal of nearly 140 Kiwi troops from Bamyan province, an engagement which is taking a mounting toll on strained defence resources.

The Government recently rolled over the Bamyan Provincial Reconstruction Team’s deployment for another year from September but sources confirmed yesterday that an earlier withdrawal was on the cards as the …

Ronaldo Stunner Puts Holders United through

Cristiano Ronaldo’s sixth-minute strike saw holders Manchester United become the first English team to win in Porto, reaching the semifinals of the Champions League 3-2 on aggregate in the process

The European Player of the Year fired a spectacular 35-yard strike into the top corner as United remained on course to become the first team to retain the Champions League — and will now face Premier League rivals Arsenal for a place in the final in Rome.

The stunning goal was Ronaldo’s 20th of the season but only his second in the Champions League since scoring the opener in last year’s final in Moscow.

After drawing the first leg 2-2 at Old Trafford, Porto only needed a low-scoring draw to …

Small-Town Texas: Meat, Music and Mayhem

LUCKENBACH, Texas – From Laredo to El Paso, the geography of Texas has always provided a powerful lexicon for country and western lyrics.

However, when Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson rocketed the song Luckenbach, Texas (Back to the Basics of Love) to the top of the charts, the hit made this Texas ghost town more than just another signpost on the state’s musical highway.

The song’s success came as no big shock to fans of the genre. The surprise is just how this tiny piece of central Texas real estate has maintained fans’ fascination almost four decades after the 1970s hit.

The place is a magnet for tourists who travel to the Texas hill country every year just to wrap …

An Imbiber’s Guide to the Bahamas

Moments after I arrived at the airport in Nassau, a man standing behind a booth placed a complimentary Gombay Smash in my hand. After a long flight (OK, from Toronto it’s a tad over three hours), the drink went down smoothly, but I knew enough to pace myself: This would be the first rum-laden concoction of many.

My itinerary unfolded like a party animal’s dream, a five-day journey via land, air and sea from Nassau through the Exuma Islands with one objective in mind: to check out the watering holes.

It isn’t the cheapest of holidays: Bahamians have yet to create a transportation infrastructure designed for seamless, affordable island hopping. Visitors to the Out Islands must shell out for water …

Lack of Vitamins A and C Could Increase Chances of Asthma

A diet low in vitamins A and C can increase the risk of developing asthma, researchers claim.

A review of 40 studies found that people with low levels of the key vitamins were more likely to suffer from asthma than those without the condition.

Each vitamin was independently linked with an increase in the risk of asthma, with people with the lowest levels of vitamin A appearing to have more severe asthma than other sufferers.

The findings, published in the journal Thorax, contradict a large-scale study published last year which found no link between levels of antioxidants in the diet and asthma.

But the latest researchers claim theirs is a more robust study. The review of studies that measured dietary …

Six brilliant budget hotels in…. Paris

Let’s hear it for the two-star hotels of Paris. For years, the talk of the town has been all about the rising tide of luxury, so it’s a huge relief to rediscover a proud tradition of hotel-keeping at the other end of the market. 1 Grand Hôtel Lévêque

If Rue Cler didn’t exist, the Paris tourist board would have had to invent it. Neat, pedestrianised and lined with artisan bakers, cheese shops and charcuteries, it’s one of the hottest foodie spots in the French capital. And would you …

How will I benefit from running?

For starters, it tones muscles in your legs, hips, and abdomen. And, as an aerobic exercise, it builds cardiovascular health by working your heart muscle and improving oxygen supply to your muscles. What’s more, running reduces your risk of heart attack, develops your endurance, relieves stress, and burns calories quickly. Depending on factors including your weight, pace, and how hilly your route is, you’ll burn 500 to as much as 1,000 calories an hour.

How do I get started?

Find routes that you can use year round (you’ll want a well-lit option when the days get short) and that have smooth, relatively soft surfaces, like asphalt or dirt. Variety is the spice of life, …

How will I benefit from bicycling?

For starters, you’ll tone your calves, thighs, and hips while burning 350 to 700 calories an hour. Cycling boosts your aerobic capacity, too — new cyclists see up to a 20 percent increase during the first four months. That means your heart will deliver oxygen to muscles more efficiently, taking the effort out of climbing stairs and carrying groceries. You’ll also reduce your risk of colon cancer and lower your cholesterol level and blood pressure. And bicycling is one of the few aerobic exercises that’s easy to incorporate into a full day. On a bike, you can run errands or commute to work.

How should I choose a bicycle?

Your best bet is a …
