US soldier dies in northern Iraq

Another American soldier has died in a non-combat incident in northern Iraq, says a statement by the US military.

The incident, which took place on Monday, is under investigation, said the statement without giving further details.

The death comes as Washington ended its combat operations in Iraq in August 2010. However, nearly 50,000 US troops remain in the country for “training and advisory.”

On Saturday, three US soldiers were killed in operations in northern and central Iraq and another US soldier was injured in the north.

US forces are expected to withdraw from Iraq by the end of 2011 as part of an agreement between Washington and Baghdad.

Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has ruled out any extension to the foreign presence in the country beyond what has been stipulated in the agreement.
