A 23-year-old soldier from Niles, Michigan may have been killed by friendly fire.
Seaman Benjamin Rast was killed while he was on patrol in Afghanistan‘s Hemland Province.
Details of Rast’s death are not being released by the Department of Defense but his father tells a tv station in South Bend, Indiana that he was given the impression that his son’s death may have been the result of a rocket.
Robert Rast also says his son may have been accidentally killed by friendly fire and that the Navy is investigating.
Rast joined the Navy about a year ago, but had only been in military news Afghanistan for a month. He was assigned as a medic to the 1st Battalion, 23rd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division.
The Niles native graduated in 2006 from Brandywine High School where he played football and baseball. Rast also attended Lake Michigan College and played semi-pro football in Indiana.
