An Australian soldier and an Afghan soldier were injured when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated north of Tarin Kowt in Afghanistan on Saturday

Other members of the patrol gave the wounded soldiers first aid before they were flown to the ISAF medical facility at Tarin Kowt.

The Australian Defence Department says both soldiers are in a satisfactory condition and their families have been notified.

A second device was discovered by a patrol following the explosion.

The area was cordoned off while ordnance disposal specialists rendered it safe.

Australian and Afghan troops have been the target of several IED attacks in southern Afghanistan over the past few days.

In a separate incident over the weekend, another patrol was struck with what was believed to be a road-side bomb.

There were no injuries reported from the IED strike.

On Monday, an Australian soldier suffered minor injuries after his patrol struck what was believed to be an IED. He is being treated for his wounds and will return to duty.
